Why is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose mixed in ready-mixed mortar

Why is hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose mixed in ready-mixed mortar?

Answer: HPMC can slow down the water loss rate of mortar. The water loss of mortar includes two processes:

First, the water inside the mortar diffuses to the surface;

The second is that the water on the mortar surface evaporates or diffuses into the base material. Only when the water source inside the mortar continuously diffuses to the surface can it evaporate on the surface or diffuse to the base material; Only when the water on the mortar surface evaporates or diffuses into the base material can a large humidity gradient be formed in the mortar to promote the diffusion of water inside the mortar to the surface. These two processes are interactive. Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose has the function of adsorbing water molecules, and even controls the diffusion of water molecules to the surface through intermolecular forces, thus slowing down the water loss rate of mortar. For construction occasions with severe environmental conditions, this water-retaining effect can not only win the time of stress relaxation, but also maintain the necessary water for the hydration reaction of the cementitious material, thus ensuring the normal development of mortar performance and improving the resistance of mortar.

The water loss rate of mortar is related to the ambient temperature and humidity, and the thickness of mortar. Different types of mortar also need different specifications and models of HPMC.
